Get in touch about a lock, a key or a door

A phone call is usually the shortest route, because most lock problems are easier to describe out loud than to type. Written enquiries are answered during opening hours.

Send the details

Every field here is used; the one that is optional says so. The more you can say about what the lock or key is doing, the more useful the reply will be, and for a vehicle the year, make and model change the answer completely.

The quickest way to sort out a lock question.

Include the quadrant — NW, NE, SW or SE.

For a vehicle: year, make, model, and whether a working key exists. For a door: what the lock does when you turn the key.

Sending this emails the details straight to the shop. The message is not saved on the website. If you would rather not use the form, write to [email protected] or call (202)929-4209.

Before you write

Some questions have answers already

If your question is about whether to rekey or replace, how to tell why a door has stopped latching, or which car key you are holding, there is a good chance it is covered in the guides in more detail than an email reply would manage.

Shorter answers — identification, quotes, what happens to old keys — are on the questions page.

Coverage

Check the address first

All four quadrants of the District are within our working area. Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Hyattsville, Arlington and Alexandria depend on the day and the job.

If you are outside the District, say so in your first message and we will tell you straight away rather than after scheduling. The coverage page explains how that decision gets made.

Questions and answers

Questions about getting in touch

What is the best way to get in touch?

The phone, for anything happening at the door — a lock that will not open, a key that has broken. The form or email suit planned work: rekeying a house you are about to move into, a key system for a business, quotes you want in writing.

How soon will I hear back?

During opening hours we aim to answer the phone when it rings and to reply to written enquiries the same working day. We are not going to put a number on that, because a figure we cannot keep is worse than no figure at all.

What happens to what I type into the form?

It is emailed to the shop and nothing is kept on the website itself. Your email address is used to reply to you. The message includes the IP address it was sent from, which is there to deal with automated abuse. See the privacy note.

Can I visit the shop?

We are at 1 Kennedy St NW. Most of our work is mobile, so call before coming by rather than arriving to a locked door and an unhelpful sense of irony.

Prefer to talk it through?

The phone is answered from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, every day of the week.
